If you're in the midst of bikini or figure competition training, you know that helping your body recover from a workout is just as important as fueling it beforehand. After all, what good will that cardio session do you if your muscles don't actively repair themselves following all that strain?
It's well-known that your body needs ample amounts of protein to build itself back up after an intense gym session. However, with so many post-workout snacking options out there, it can be difficult to figure out the right choice for your routine. In the past, this blog has covered some great protein-packed offerings that won't leave you limited to the same old protein shakes, including versatile chickpeas and Greek yogurt. Now, we'll cover another possibility that competitors with a sweet tooth are bound to get excited about: chocolate milk.
Perhaps you've already heard that chocolate milk is a great post-workout choice, but were (understandably) a bit skeptical about the advice. Take it from us - this guidance is completely well-founded. In 2009, researchers from James Madison University in Virginia conducted a study and found that chocolate milk was more effective at reducing muscle damage than sports drinks among a group of football players after training.
For the best results, though, you may want to make your own mixture instead of grabbing a Yoo-Hoo from your local convenience store. The fitness website Stack suggests using low-fat milk, 100 percent cocoa and a touch of sugar to really reap the benefits of this delicious and surprisingly nutritious drink.
However, as with most elements of your competition diet, timing is everything.
"Chocolate milk is a great post-workout drink, but don't consume it before or during exercise," the site notes. "It could upset your stomach and do more harm than good."
